Of late, I have been struggling a bit to reconcile interpretations of this myth with the Thorsson-derived "Odian" approach, where "Giving Self-to-Self" seems largely to be an exercise in some kind of ego-gratification. This seems like a great take that simultaneously acknowledges the role of the self and will in the process while also aiming at something higher than "self-improvement" or "getting what you want". It also helps that mythologically Odin has plenty of "service-orientation" in the actions he takes in the myths, even when they are on the back of his seemingly selfish power-seeking.
